SOS Children’s Village started operations in The Gambia in 1982 after 2 years of intervention in child survival. The Village is the flagship project SOS Kinderdorf International, an international charity organization with headquarter in Austrian. The organization is involved with several projects in education, literacy, health, youth development, and child protection. In 1984 a Vocational Training Centre, and in 1991 the SOS Youth Homes were opened. A fully equipped medical centre that treats women and children out-patients was later opened.
