The GCCI was founded in 1967 as a result of the merger between the Gambia Employer's Organization and the Bathurst Chamber. It is a voluntary, not-for-profit, private sector organization whose membership is made up of companies from all sectors of the Gambian business community. It had membership of 700 businesses as of 2008. The main purpose of the GCCI is the delivery of business service to its members and  and the private sector in general. It also acts as a lobby to influence business policy in order to establish an environment that is favorable for business activities.
